Classic kids, or 100 films the kids in your life have to see by 13 or else!

Day 59:  The Farmer's Daughter (1949)

This movie is such fun.  It tells the story of a Swedish maid who runs for congress on a whim.  The maid, played by Loretta Young, is a lovely character, smart, resourceful, and hard-working.  Young received an Academy award for her portrayal.  Her love interest is the suave Joseph Cotten.  Drew Barrymore's great Aunt, Ethel, plays the Matriarch of the household and as always the actress holds her own.  The film is funny, light and intelligently written.

Themes:  Immigrants, bigotry, politics, labor
Media Literacy Questions for kids:  Why does Katie run for Congress?  How does the film convey Katie's Swedish ethnicity?  What are some of the obstacles Katie faces?  Is there an overall moral to the story?
