Classic Kids, or 100 films the kids in your life have to see by 13 or else!
Day 58  Star Wars  (1977)

Yesterday, we talked about Shane, a classic post World War II Western.  Today, the themes of the Western, good and evil, travel to new frontiers, in space, with Star Wars.  In the summer of 1977 this epic space opera hit it big at the box office, and started what is perhaps one of the most successful Hollywood franchises ever, with multiple film follow-ups, books, video games and toys.  My daughter Jacki and her dad, John, both play with their light sabers, it is quite a sight.  What a cast, a baby-faced Harrison Ford, the very young Carrie Fisher and, an actor at the end of his career, Alec Guinness.

Themes:  Good, evil, morals, obstacles
Media Literacy questions for the kids:  How is Star Wars similar to traditional Hollywood Westerns?  How did the film makers create a sense of outer-space?   What are some core values in the film?
