Classic Kids, or 100 films that the kids in your life have to see by 13 or else!

Day 39:  Matilda (1996)

I resisted, but fell in love with the charms of this film.  Both my daughters, Joelle and Jacqueline turned me on to Matilda  The story of a girl with magical gifts that help her finally find love and kindness.  What turned me off at first?   Well it was a 'newer' movie, and the adults in the film just seemed so darn mean; but then I watched my girls enjoy this film with such vigor that I had to rethink it.  The film based on the Roald Dahl book Matilda, is now a hit Broadway play nominated for several Tony awards.  The film was more of a sleeper picking up steam from kids word of mouth.  There are several funny performances, and the actress that plays Matilda, Mara Wilson is grand.  Matilda is a smart and heroic little girl trapped in an insanely selfish family, but through wit and some magic she navigates her way to fun and adventure and a loving new Mom.

Themes:  Cruelty, Challenges, Love, Fairness & Education

Media Literacy Questions:  What is the moral of the story?  What are some values promoted within the movie?  How did the movie makers suggest Matilda's magical powers?
