Day 33: Fly Away Home (1996)
I tend to pick older films, but this lovely story of a father and daughter adopting a brood of baby Canada geese is so cool, particularly when the little birds imprint on her! Carroll Ballard (the Black Stallion) directed this, and has a great cast: Anna Paquin, Jeff Daniels and Dana Delany. The story is based on the actual experience of Bill Lishman and his family.
Media Literacy questions for kids: Why is this story so dramatic? How did the father and daughter's relationship change as they worked together? How is this film like other movies with kids and animals? How is this film different? Did shooting the film on locating create more authenticity?
Nice pick Juli, it's one of our favorites -- we used to watch it more often when the kids were younger.
