Day 14: Classic Kids, or films your kids have to see before they are 13 or else!
The Sound of Music
Finally, right? This movie, along with Mary Poppins, made me a Julie Andrews fan from a young age. I was going to Hoyt elementary when Hilldale movie theatre opened and showed their first film-the Sound of Music. I saw it at least 20 times, because, once again my baby sitter worked at the theatre. Even if you are a non-believer, which most of my family is, you still can't help but love this movie. I never wanted to be a nun, but I did want to be fun, musical and joyful like Maria. She, Julie Andrews, was the Maria. Not a perfect film, but so gosh dang entertaining. From the opening crane shot that zooms into Andrews, the film just takes you on a musical adventure with Maria. If you look carefully in the scene where the children and Maria sing near the Convent, you can see the 'real' Maria in the background. Songs, do you have a favorite? I love Climb every mountain, and So long. Oh, but then again how about, Do re me, or favorite things, or, the Sound of music? It really is an insanely good score, but what makes the film really work is the on-location setting. My friend Barbi took The Sound of Music tour and says it looks just the same. Lovely!
Themes: Convents, Military, Austria and WW II
Questions for the kids in your life: What song is your favorite and why? Which scene could you see again and again? Which country was this movie shot in? Where is this country on the map? Do you think this country looks the same today?
Yes, I've seen this one many times and still love it. I've never been to the sing-a-longs at the theater but hear they are fun too. What age would you suggest for this one...I remember being really scared when they are hiding from the Nazi's.

Marianne,
ReplyDeleteI should have mentioned the sing-a-longs, those were a blast. What age would I suggests? If parents/caregivers are with the child/children (and hopefully they are!) then seven years and older seems fine. That 'hiding' scene is still scary for me, and I am 51!
