Hindsight:  Film ramblings...god, how good is this film?  Location, actors, writing,

Great sewer scene

Okay, I wanted to do another scene from the "The Third Man" because it is just such a surprise.  As film viewers there is this expectation of what theorists call 'Hollywood Closure.'  Well, in this film, directed by Carol Reed, the two main characters in the film, have been connected throughout the story, but the Male actor (Joseph Cotton) has betrayed her, the woman played by an actress with one name, long before Cher and Madonna, her name- Valli.

In the scene there is just one long shot, no editing, in the left side of the frame is the Cotton character waiting for the woman to walk by and catch up with him.  Well, she is far away so he waits quite a while.  Has she get closer into view, there is this expectation that she will stop or at least acknowledge him, but instead she just walks by without even a glance.  Brilliant!  I was unable to get the clip on YouTube, but Criterion lost the rights, which is killing me, because if I could I would buy this film for the entire planet.   but then I recommend you watch the entire film, because there are so many rich, unexpected moments, like the cuckoo clock moment with Welles (Orson) and Cotton.

I did get this fun commentary from two current directors, Steven Soderbergh and Tony Gilroy that hopefully will wet your appetite to dig around for this movie.
