Classic Kids, or 100 films that the kids in your life have to see by 13 or else!

Day 93:  Topper (1937)

Fun, silly, and full of Cary Grant, need I say more?  Okay.  Well, a bit more.  This film was a huge box office and critical success in 1937.  It is a wonderful example of Hollywood in its heyday, with beautifully dressed actors, well written witty scripts and clean compact editing.  The plot follows two high society ghosts (Grant and Constant Bennett) who haunt an uptight, stuffy, all-too-serious business man.  Supporting characters are the best: Roland Young, Billie Burke, and Eugene Pallette.  The film was followed up by several sequels, and later became a television show.

Themes:  Living with abandon, Life/Death, Humor, High Society

Media Literacy Questions for Kids:  What values are explored in the film?  How did the star-studio system play a role in the casting of this movie?  Why do you think this film was so successful?  How did the film makers create the illusion of ghosts.
