Classic Kids, or 100 films that the kids in your life have to see by 13 or else!
Day 87:  Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) * kids 8 & up

How fun is this movie?  Love the fact, that the idea for this film came out of a desire by producer George Lucas to do a modern twist on the old 1930s serials, such as Flash Gordon, that played prior to the major feature film.   These serials were meant to keep audiences coming back to the theatre every week or so.  Raiders was the first of four installments.
Directed by Steven Spielberg, and starring Harrison Ford and Karen Allen, the film follows Indiana Jones, an Archaeologist played by Ford as he searches for the Ark of the Covenant.  There is one big Problem....the Nazis want the Ark as well.  This film came out in the summer of 1981 and quickly became one of the highest gross-
-ing films of all time.  Nominated for numerous Oscars, Raiders won in Art Direction, Editing, Sound, and Visual Effects.  I raised the age to 8 and older because there are a couple scary graphic moments.

Media Literacy Questions for Kids: Did you have a favorite special effect?  If so, how do you think the filmmakers achieved it?  How did music play a role in the storytelling?  Why do you think this film was so successful, leading to sequels, merchandise and even a ride at Disney-land?  Is the film similar to other big summer hits?  If so, how and also why?

Themes:  Nepal, Ten Commandments, Cairo, Digs, Washington D.C., Peru, Nazis, Egypt
