Classic Kids, or 100 films that the kids in your life have to see by 13 or else!

Day 86:  Kes  (1969)  *kids 10 and older!

Warning, this is a tough little film, but so worth the viewing.  The movie traces the daily life of a 15 year old, Billy Casper (David Bradley) growing up in Yorkshire.  He is not only bullied at school but at home as well, yet he finds  comfort with his bird, a Kestrel.   Through this relationship with the Kestrel (Kes) Billy begins to develop confidence and finds that perhaps he has a knack for Falconry.  The only time an adult recognizes Billy's potential, is when Billy gives a presentation in class on his bird, this kindly attention is revelatory for Billy.   Set in Barnsley, the movie offers a glimpse into the mining culture of the time, a world of low pay and physical risk; a world that Billy hopes to someday leave.   All of the actors speak in authentic Yorkshire accents, so hang in there!
Media literacy Questions for Kids:  How is this film different than other film/Television portrayals of bullying?  Why is the young man a hero?  Why are all of the people around the teen so stressed?  What values does the film convey?
Themes:  Isolation, Bullying, Pets, Courage, Care-taking
