Day 49: The Secret of Roan Inish (1994)
Directed by John Sayles, The Secret of Roan
Inish is an American/Irish Independent film, based on the
novel The Secret of Ron Mor Skerry, by Rosalie K. Fry. The
story is built around Irish
Folklore, and oral story tradition. The story
is told from Fiona's point-of-view, which is a fun change. Lovely story
telling and a beautiful setting in an Irish fishing village.
Here is part of a New York Times review from critic
Stephen Holden, "The Secret of Roan Inish is
the first film directed by Mr. Sayles that could be described as visually
rhapsodic. Photographed by Haskell Wexler on Ireland's rugged northwestern
seacoast, it is a cinematic tone poem in which man and nature, myth and reality
flow together in a way that makes them ultimately indivisible."
