Classic Kids, or films the kids in your life
have to see by 13 or else!
Day 36 Treasure Island (1950 film)
ARRR!
Joelle and I watched this last night Arrrr!!!! Although I usually prefer earlier treatments, this 1950
version versus the Jackie Cooper 1934 treatment, is actually more fun and
loyal to Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel.
This is Walt Disney’s first completely live-action film. Child
actor Bobby Driscoll is adorable in this film as Jim Hawkins, and Robert Newton
plays Long John Silver. It is a
wonderful tale, full of adventure, and mystery. The pieces of dialogue, lifted from the Stevenson text, help
craft this film into a real treasure.
Such as:
“Sir, with no intention to take offence, I deny your right to put words into my mouth.”
Robert Louis Stevenson
Media Literacy Questions for kids: What genre is this film/story? How is the film different than the original book by Robert Louis Stevenson? Is there a moral to the story? When and where is the story meant to take place and how does the film show this? Are there certain beliefs and values the film speaks to?
Themes: Friendship, loyalty, betrayal and codes
