Classic Kids: Day Six
Mary Poppins, 1964

One of my all time favorite movies!  I saw this movie 50 times at the Hilldale movie theatre
Because my babysitter worked their as an usher.  How cool is that for a five year old?
Well, I had a Mary Poppins doll, that my brother Jef wishes I still had, so He could sell
It on E-Bay.  Not, that I would let him!   With adult eyes, Mary may seem a tad stern, but
My daughters, Joelle and Jacqueline,  loved her and the film as well.  The musical numbers,
The sets, the wonderful effects, make this a beautiful and joyful production.  “I love to laugh”  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOMqqI-kzHY  Is a true treat.  Some great
Character actors here, such as the “feed the birds” Lady.  She is played by the Joad Ma
From 1939’s Grapes of Wrath, the actress, Jane Darnell.  Nothing is left to chance in this
Movie, what a treat.  Oh, yea, there are two major stars in here as well, Julie Andrews
As Mary and Dick Van Dyke as Bert, the Chimney Sweep and sidewalk artist.

Many people sing "feed the birds song" here are the sweet lyrics:

Early each day to the steps of St. Paul's, the little old bird woman comes... In her own special way to the people she calls, come buy my bags full of crumbs. Come feed the little birds, show them you care, and you'll be glad if you do. Their young ones are hungry, their nests are so bare; all it takes is tuppence from you. Feed the birds, tuppence a bag. Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag... Feed the birds, that's what she cries, while overhead her birds fill the skies. All around the cathedral the saints and apostles look down as she sells her wares. Although you can't see it, you know they are smiling each time someone shows that he cares. Though her words are simple and few, listen, listen, she's calling to you. Feed the birds, tuppence a bag. Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag. Though her words are simple and few, listen, listen she's calling to you. Feed the birds, tuppence a bag. Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.

Themes:  Class, turn of the century England, Charity, parental love or lack of, humor
                    and joy.

Questions:  What scene is your favorite and why?  Which actors do you recognize?
What and how are the different types of jobs portrayed in the film?  What makes this film unique, were their things that stood out?
