Classic Kids: Day Five
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir

Another one of Joelle’s favorites, we both discovered this film when she was five.  Now, my children are rather familiar with Turner Classic Movie Channel, so they are always ready for a black and white classic.  Whereas yesterday’s film was strictly for children, this film is perhaps for the older kids in our audience, by that I mean at least 7-8 years of age.  One of the key characters is a ghost, so that might scare some children, even though he is a funny, sassy ghost.  This movie is really  a treasure, such fun to see our heroine navigate a relationship with a (gulp) ghost!

Themes:  loss, responsibility, hope and renewal. Other concepts, turn of the century gender roles, fashion, fantasy, life changes, events, motherhood, and listening to your own voice.

Questions to promote media literacy:  Is this movie scary?  If not, why?  What does the film do to make things seem eerie?  How is our heroine different than other heroines?  How is our Hero equally unique?
