Hindsight: Film ramblings and other good stuff
Okay, I have written some things about movies this past summer, and in the process learned a tad about this whole blogging thing. At first I did a list of 100 top films for kids, listing a film each day. It has been a struggle to find out how to write like I talk, but I will keep at it, because I think film is an amazing form of communication, that is worthy of discourse. I am still trying to get more folks into the chat section so would love ideas on that. Since I share the Hindsight blog with face-book friends much of the responses come via that route, but would like to get folks challenging me on the link itself. The past week I have been focusing, in the back to school vein on films with educational themes, such as To Sir with Love, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, & The Corn is Green. Today, thought I would do a shout out for Goodwill Hunting. Why? Because it gets to the juicy aspects of what it means to learn. The arrogance of some, which this scene below beautifully articulates, who think because they can repeat ideas from a Prof., they are somehow better. Believe me going to graduate school in my 40s, I came across some great fellow learners, but man were there some kids that loved using those five dollar words to show authority, like a crazed dog peeing on every little tree in sight. Learning, real learning I believe involves humility, and the constant questioning and curiosity that comes from a place of actually sensing that perhaps we all have a lot to learn. There is a lesson in this film, ask questions, raise your hand, and NEVER believe that just because someone has a PhD, Masters, whatever, that they know what is right or 'true.' It took me alot to get my PhD, but what I really learned is that I have ALOT to learn. :)
