Classic kids, or 100 films that the kids in your life have to see by 13 or else!

Day 84: Born Free (1966)

This was a movie that seemed to be on every year when I was a kid.   There was something about the way animals were treated and viewed that seemed special.   In Born Free animals are respected as having needs, emotions and longing.  The plot is based on the real-life couple, Joy and  George Adamson and their experiences in Kenya.  Born Free is basically a story of a pet and its owner,  but in this case the ‘pet’ is a baby lion cub, named Elsa.  The film picked up a couple academy award, one for the title song, Born Free, a cheesy but catchy tune.

Themes:  Loyalty, Independence, Attachment, Care
Media Literacy Questions for Kids:  What is the key dilemma of the film?  How did the filmmakers get the lion to perform along with the actors?  Where was this film shot?  What is the moral to the story?  Are there values in the film you agree with or and disagree with?
