Classic kids, or 100 films that the kids in your life have to see by 13 or else!
Day 91: The Quiet Man (1952)

If only to see the images of the Irish countryside, this film is worth the trip.  Directed by John Ford, this story of an ex-boxer who returns to his roots in Ireland, in the fictitious town of Innisfree, is full of action, folly and spirited dialogue.  The drawn out fight scene between John Wayne (who plays the lead character of Sean Thorton)  and Victor McLaglen (who plays Squire Will Danagher) is wonderfully choreographed, a must see.  Maureen O'Hara, and Barry Fitzgerald also star and lend a furhter dose of Irish blarney to the whole film.  Taking place in the 1920s, the plot centers around Sean's relationship and eventual marriage to Mary Kate Danagher (O'Hara).  Much of the humor of the film is built around Sean's inability to adapt to Irish customs.  Ford uses family member from his family, as well as O'Hara's and Wayne's to play minor characters.

Media Literacy Questions for Kids:  Why does the location shoot add to the drama/humor of this film?  How was this film a departure for John Ford the film's director, and John Wayne, the actor?  What are key values within the plot?
