Classic Kids, or 100 films that the kids in your life have to see by 13 or else!

Day 71:  Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)

James Mason, James Mason, James Mason, what a lovely actor and how charming he is in this delicious film based on the Jules Verne classic.  The gender roles are pretty traditional, with men as the thinkers and the lone woman as a person defined by her beauty and marital status.  It's a good chance to talk with your kids about the way stories are influenced by the era of production.  That said, the film still delivers fun as Mason and the gang make their way into a volcano in Iceland to the Journey to the Center of the Earth.  Watch out for the Gila Monsters, ah!

Media Literacy Questions:  How is the film different than the book?  What is the moral to the story?  What special effects were used, and how do you think they were achieved?
