Day 56: Freaky Friday (1976 and 2003)
My daughters, Joelle and Jacqueline, watched both of the Freaky Friday versions back to back, and it was such fun to see how the same story was altered in different ways to suit the era. The earlier version stars a young Jodie Foster, which is fun in itself. This 1976 film is tamer in language and sexual suggestion so might be the safer bet for the younger kids. However, the later version is pretty tame and equally as fun. Both films, based on the novel by Mary Rodger, combine comedy and fantasy to tell the tale of a mother and daughter who accidentally switch bodies and have to experience each other's lives for a day.
Themes: Perspective, maturity, and understanding
Media literacy questions for kids: How is the 1976 version different than the 2003 film, in dress, language, situations, and expectations of the girls? Is there a moral to the story?
