Day 44: The Petit Prince (1974)
. The film is based on the novella Le Petit Prince, by writer, poet and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Before seeing the movie do read the text, a beautiful piece of writing, with enchanting watercolor illustrations. The story involves a pilot stranded in the desert who meets a young boy, a prince. The prince has fallen to earth via a small asteroid. They both travels through space and come upon an array of bizarre grown-ups, non-human animals and different planetoids. Along the way the prince learns an array of lessons, particularly from the fox, played by Gene Wilder. The fox is perhaps the most profound character within the plot, speaking to the key themes of the story: love, creativity, beauty and kindness. The fox: "One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye." Or, "It is the time you have devoted to your rose that makes your rose so important."
Media Literacy Questions for kids: What is different about the storytelling in the film versus the novella? What are the core values that the prince comes to see? How do the filmmakers create the multiple backgrounds for the journey? How would you tell this film is you were creating a movie?
