Classic kids, or films the kids in your life have to see by 13 or else!

 Day 21
Anne of Green Gables  (1934 & or the 1985 TV movie)

I cheat a tad today by including two versions, but the 1934 version is somewhat creaky (being a relatively early talkie) and the 1985 version is also good and probably more assessable.  It might be fun to watch both versions, a marathon of sorts, that’s what the girls, Joelle and Jacqueline, and I did.  We watched the 1985 version first, and then the other.  You can then draw comparisons between modes of production, acting styles, plot points, etc.  In fact comparisons are a great way to develop media literacy skills.

The story based on the book by Lucy Maud Montgomery, follows the ups and downs of a spirited young orphan who becomes beloved by her new family and the entire village.  If you value curiosity and imagination, you will LOVE Anne!

Trivia:  the actress who played Anne Shirley, (Dawn O’Day)  in the 1934 version changed her name to Anne Shirley after playing this role.  So for the rest of her film career that lasted into the 1940s she was listed as Anne Shirley.

Themes:  Adoption, poverty, education, friendship and family

Media literacy questions:  How are the two film versions different?  Do you prefer the 1934 or 1985 version and why?  Why is Anne such a unique character?  How do the adults learn from Anne?
