Classic Kids, or 100 films the kids in your life have to see by 13 or else!

Day 30:  Little Women (1994)

Based on the Louisa May Alcott novel of the same name, there are several film versions of the Little Women, I prefer the 1994 telling directed by Gillian Armstrong.  Our daughter JoJo is named after Jo, love that character. Jo's independence and her struggles to find herself are the foundation of the story.

Roger Ebert said this about the film:  "A surprisingly sharp and intelligent telling of Louisa May  Alcott's famous story, and not the soft-edged children's movie it might appear.... I saw that Gillian   Armstrong . . . was taking it seriously. And then I began to appreciate the ensemble acting, with the five actresses creating the warmth and familiarity of a real family."

The film boasts a great cast:  Winona Ryder as Jo, Gabriel Byrne as Friedrich, Kirsten Dunst as Young Amy, Claire Danes as Beth, Susan Sarandon as Marmee, and lovely character actor Mary Wickes as Aunt March.

Themes:  Family, loyalty, growing up, death, birth, marriage, love, independence

Media literacy questions:  What scenes from the book did the film explore?  How are the characters different from each other?  What time period is the film meant to portray.  How is the 1994 version vastly different than earlier ones?
