Classic Kids, or films the kids in your life must see before they are 13 or else!

Day Eight:  The Mark of Zorro

The Mark of Zorro, director Rouben Mamoulian’s classic 1940 swashbuckler, starring Tyrone Power as Don Diego Vega.  The hearty hero pretends to be a spoiled lazy aristocrat when he isn’t donning a mask and fighting the crooked government.   In some ways this is Robin Hood moved to Southern California, but it doesn’t matter.  The kid in your life must see this film, as well as the Adventures of Robin Hood.  The twist to Zorro is the duel roles, such fun.   This Zorro version is the best; do NOT watch the later versions.  Tyrone Power is brilliant, the sword fighting is sublime and Linda Darnell is a subtle heroine.  The poster for the film is in color, but the movie is in black and white.  Sometimes that freaks people out a bit (being a b&w picture), but I found if you start kids young on these films, they never have that bias as adults.

I believe you can watch the whole movie on Utube.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMcTKNDB2TM

Hope this link will still work for you.

Themes:  Spain, Southern California in the early 1800's, secret identities, fencing

Questions to ask:  How is Zorro similar to Robin Hood?  How is Zorro different than Robin Hood?  Why does Zorro have a secret identity?  How were the poor represented versus the rich in the film?

  1. How is Zorro similar to Robin Hood? BOTH ROBBED FROM THE RICH AND GAVE TO THE POOR, BOTH WERE EXCELLENT SWORDSMEN, BOTH RESCUED THE LOCAL VILLAGE FROM THE EVIL LANDLORD, BOTH EVENTUALLY GOT THE GIRL TOO!
How is Zorro different than Robin Hood? HISPANIC (MEXICAN) V. WHITE (ENGLISH), ZORRO WORE A MASK, ROBIN HOOD DID NOT, ZORRO WORKED ALONE, RH WORKED WITH HIS MERRY MEN, EVERYONE KNEW WHO ROBIN HOOD WAS, NO ONE (REALLY) KNEW WHO ZORRO WAS. Why does Zorro have a secret identity? BECAUSE HE IS FROM THE ELITE OF MEXICO AND WOULD HARM HIS FAMILY AND HIS SUCCESS IF PEOPLE KNEW WHO HE WAS. How were the poor represented versus the rich in the film? THE POOR WERE INNOCENT, MORAL AND HONEST, THE POOR WERE RUTHLESS AND DIS-HONEST...GREEDY AND NO MORALS. GREAT QUESTIONS JULI!!!!:)
